European Union curbs power of Apple and other digital 'gatekeepers' with new legislation
On 18 July 2022, the Council of the European Union gave its final approval to the Digital Markets Act. This act contains new rules that should make it easier to limit the market power of very large digital companies (so-called 'gatekeepers'), such as Apple.
Earlier, on 5 July 2022, the European Parliament had also approved the Digital Markets Act (see
here). As both the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union have given their approval, the Act has now been officially adopted (see
here).
The Digital Markets Act is expected to come into force in 2023.
